Was the Thracian falx a polearm akin to the Bill? Is there any archaeological evidence of this weapon at all? I used to think it was, but I just saw a picture of one being wielded more like a sword than a polearm.

TIA

Matt

The Dacian Falx/Thracian Rhomphia is considered a sword, in use much like a katana. However, I personally consider it more of a short polearm. Although I suppose the difference between a short polearm and a long sword could just be semantical.

Here's a picture of Steven Peffley using a replica of a falx:

There are more pics here: http://www.larp.com/legioxx/rdays.html

There have been some archeological finds, in fact there was a website concerning the arms of ancient Thrace which illustrated some of these arms, and which I inconveniently don't have the current URL to....
You might also want to look for the Osprey/Men-At-Arms series book The Thracians, 700 BC -- AD 46, by Christopher Webber. Several recovered rhomphia blades are illustrated on page 39.

It may take a bit of digging, but they're there.

That thing looks an awful lot like a farm implement I saw moldering in someone's barn the other day.

"Falx" is Latin for "sickle", so the farming implement connection is pretty strong.

Maybe the falx evolved from the sickle?

I would think the falx would be closer to a scythe, or a very large sickle.

Well, considering that he's the guy in the picture above, I'm assuming those are the measurements of the weapon he is using.

Dear Friends,

I just joined the group after finding a thread of discussion on the Dacian Falx. I am researching because I just purchased my second Falx, a 65 inch long monster that will be my longest ancient sword.

I have been looking for excavated examples to compare to my two pieces but have been unsuccessful so far, I would appreciate any assistance.

If you wish to see photos of my swords, join http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ancientweapons
then go to the Photo archive and click on All Albums > Europe > Dacia

I will be happy to answer any questions, you can email me directly at jpisc98357@aol.com or call me at (708)246-7111.

Best regards, John Piscopo
