Have you tried tracking down the maker and contacting them? If not try a search on Google.

OK, than we need to do some research :-{)

Where did Black live and who did he sell bowie knives to?

Have you tried getting in touch with any of the folks who teach bowie knife now to see if they know anything about Black and his knives?

Just search for "musso bowie" at Google. The most relevant result is at
http://www.engnath.com/public/histdraw.htm

but you will also turn up some pictures and stuff. For more detailed info, you could look up (e.g., in the library) the issue of Guns & Ammo that had an article on Musso's collection (I think - at least on the Bowie). For that matter, you could probably find an email address for Musso and ask him directly, since (as far as I know) he's still working in Hollywood.

I normally don't contribute much here; However since this is a subject of interest to me ......You'll find the Musso Bowie on the Alamo Movie Site in an article about James Bowie....their forum also has a long run about Bowie knives. Alamo de Parras has an article " A Knife Like Bowie's that shows photos of most of the key knifes that claim to have been used by Bowie himself. The Discovery Channel's (maybe the History Channel, I forget) that featured John Edmonson (Bowie Expert) and showed GOOD views of the Musso Bowie. www.startribune.com/news/taste/texas/14.shtml has a picture of Elmer Bankead holding the Musso Bowie. Atlanta Cutlery has a Frontier Bowie that is a close replica of the Musso that I use as a trainer at my school. In my book Bowie & Big Knife Training I did not reference the Musso Bowie because it has some contraversial claims to reinforce it's authenticity. Being a spiritual person, one gets a strange feeling when you see the knife even on video.. It looks used . Last I heard they had a definite fix on the blade as being from the 1830s...some feel that it was one of the presentation knives that Jim's brother Rezin had made. Did Bowie own it? I don't think we will ever know. There is a lot of Bowie myth out there . Be careful in your research.

Best
Dwight

And Mr. Durrant, it might help you to get more help if you were TO TAKE YOUR KEYBOARD OFF OF CAPSLOCK and go with Caps and lowers; it's really no more difficult to use, and it will not grate upon the sensibilities in the shouty way CAPSLOCK does.
